From hyper-realist dance theatre to grime-infused ballet Here's an excellent way to get better acquainted with an exhilarating range of dance styles. This March, the Southbank Centre hosts the UK premiere of Roommates — a programme of six pieces curated by renowned dance collective LA(HORDE), and performed by Ballet national de Marseille. Each piece pays homage to choreographers that have shaped LA(HORDE)'s unique perspective. There's the minimalist Concerto by Lucinda Childs; Claude Brumachon and Benjamin Lamarche's sensual male duet, Les Indomptés; Peeping Tom's theatrical, folklore-inspired Oiwa; and Grime Ballet – Dance Because You Can’t Talk to Animals by Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, which smashes together genres like Jamaican dancehall, krump, house, and grime. Plus, there are two works by LA(HORDE) itself — a fantastic chance to discover these boundary-pushing artists, who've previously worked with Madonna, Spike Jonze, and Sam Smith.
You'll find Ballet national de Marseille: Roommates in Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, 1-3 March. Tickets start at £20. |
