Incredible Indian classical music this week at Wigmore Hall

The best cure for the January blues? A hearty dose of culture, at one of London's most beautiful concert halls! Get the new year off to a flying start with exceptional music at Wigmore Hall including sarodiyas Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

For anyone not too familiar with Indian classical music, a sarodiya is a musician who plays the sarod: a fretless stringed instrument used in Hindustani music. The sarodiyas at Wigmore Hall will be joined by a variety of musicians from both Indian and Western classical traditions to present music based on various ragas  melodic frameworks for improvisation that are unique to Indian classical music.

There are four concerts in total, taking place between Saturday 7 January and Monday 9 January. Below you'll find the low-down on each one

A Little Morning Music

Start your Saturday on the right note with sarodiya Amjad Ali Khan and tabla player Anubrata Chatterjee. At 11.30am on 7 January, they treat Wigmore Hall to a series of morning ragas. As Amjad puts it, "Ragas played in the morning... have a distinctive feature in approach, movement, aesthetic and feeling". Why not pair this with an evening concert and compare for yourself?

From Bach To Bengal

Indian and Western musical traditions converge in a programme that sees violinist Jennifer Pike collaborate with members of the Khan family. Bach's Partita for the Violin No.3 meets folk music from Bengal and Assam, with compositions by Amjad Ali Khan that use evening and nighttime ragas. Saturday 7 January at 7.30pm.

East Meets West

Amjad Ali Khan is again joined by his sons and fellow sarod players Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, alongside Anubrata Chatterjee on the tabla and guitarist Sean Shibe on Sunday 8 January. This programme also unites Indian and Western traditions, with music based on various ragas, including ones drawn from the 13th and 15th-century repertoires.

A Tribute To Mahatma Gandhi

The beautiful, romantic Raga Desh opens this programme, presented in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. It's followed by Amjad Ali Khan's Sarod Concerto, which contains 12 different ragas. It's performed by Amjad with the Refugee Orchestra Project, which aims to demonstrate the vital contributions refugees make to society and culture. Monday 9 January at 7.30pm.
