A recent image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope has been intriguing the internet, as it shows an unusual feature that looks like a giant question mark. The focus of the image is on two active young stars, called a Herbig-Haro object, with the strange object located in the background near the bottom of the image.
According to physics professor Matt Caplan, the question mark-shaped object is most likely to be two galaxies merging. When galaxies get close to each and begin to merge, the forces of gravity can pull them into irregular shapes, which is what could have created the question mark.
The color of the object also gives some clues to its identity. As it is red, that indicates it is very distant, and its color does match some other background galaxies. But Caplan said that more follow-up studies would be needed to say for certain what the object is.
