Ditch the script

Good morning, happy Saturday, and welcome to the June 1 edition of the Saints Insider Newsletter. Only a few more calendar turns until football season, y'all.

Plenty of stuff to get to, so let's get after it, shall we?

Hungry Haener

I enjoyed my colleague Matthew Paras' feature story on second-year quarterback Jake Haener, and the way he's attacked this offseason (and the new playbook).

Haener opened up about his rookie season, and how his strong training camp may have been inflated by literally knowing what the defense was going to call because of the way the Saints scripted plays.

His preseason performances were uninspiring, he served a six-game suspension and he never appeared in a game. Then the Saints drafted quarterback Spencer Rattler this spring.

But Haener has taken all of it in stride, and came out on the other side looking sharp. I particularly enjoyed this quote:

"This is the NFL, and at the end of the day, if I want to accomplish my goals, I'm going to have to compete with a lot of different people. ... It’s really been the same story for me. I’ve always been the underdog, and I’ve always had that mentality.”

Disclaimer: It is very, very early, and things will only get more difficult from here, but Haener was easily one of the more impressive performers in the two OTA practices the media was allowed to see the last few weeks.

Kool-Aid signs

The Saints entire 2024 draft class is now under contract after second-round pick Kool-Aid McKinstry inked his rookie deal Friday.

New Orleans traded up to snag McKinstry with the No. 41 pick. He hasn't yet participated in any of the Saints offseason — because of injury, not his contract — but the Saints think they got a good one at a premium position.

Brees back in the booth?

A lot of time was spent Thursday afternoon reminiscing on the past when the Saints announced Drew Brees would be the newest member of their Hall of Fame. But what about the future?

Brees made clear that he has not given up on his dream of being a broadcaster — and added that he thinks he "could be the best at it."

Speaking of Brees, make sure you check out the latest edition of the Saints Insider podcast, as our crew got together to share our favorite memories of No. 9 in a Saints uniform.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
