I recently stopped by the "Orcas: Our Shared Future" exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Utah to learn more about the marine animals dubbed "killer whales."
The exhibit features more than 140 artifacts and hosts multiple life size reproductions and fossil casts that reminded me just how massive these creatures really are.
One of my favorite things I learned is that orcas need to eat 5% of their body weight in food every day. That's nearly 500 pounds of food!
The exhibition will be open until April, so you have plenty of time to learn more about these powerful mammals who are capable of banding together to ram down boats.

Since entering office in 2021, Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, has approved record budgets for education, increased the weighted pupil unit by at least 5% every year, and green-lit millions in COVID-19-related teacher bonuses.
During the past two legislative sessions, Cox backed the state GOP supermajority in promoting parental rights and protecting against inappropriate or discriminatory conduct in schools.
These measures — which include prohibiting explicit materials in school libraries, pairing $8,000 student vouchers with teacher raises, clarifying restrictions on bathroom use and banning diversity, equity and inclusion practices — sit at the center of Cox’s reelection bid.
Rep. Brian King, his opponent in the race for governor, has framed some of these reforms as Cox's greatest liabilities.
More than 4 in 10 Utahns say violence against the government can be justified, according to a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll conducted by HarrisX.
The 813 registered Utah voters were asked, “Do you think violence against the government can be justified or is never justified?”
Here are some of the results from the poll.
43% of Utahns are "very concerned" with political violence in the United States
85% are at least concerned with political violence
62% of those age 18-34 say violence against the government can be justified
65% of Latter-day Saint members say that violence against government can never be justified
“The findings suggest that perspectives on political violence are deeply influenced by identity and ideology,” said Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics.
“Since 2020, our nation has seen unprecedented demonstrations, both peaceful and violent," he said. "In Utah, escalating political rhetoric and narrow electoral margins have shifted perceptions on political violence across the political spectrum.”
