Gun violence: This year, there have been a lot of bad nights for trauma doctors and nurses in Cleveland. Through mid-November, police have investigated 158 homicides and 1,169 felonious assaults with guns, according to city records. MetroHealth's Dr. Jeffrey Claridge and other doctors are seeing ugly trends: The wounded victims are younger, and the damage to their bodies is far greater. And Molly Walsh reports doctors and nurses who work on those patients are feeling deeper levels of burnout. Online predator: The group of men from across the country gathered on Skype to coordinate for a sinister goal: to trick girls as young as 11 to undress and perform sex acts in front of a web camera, authorities say. Everyone in the group had assigned roles, with perhaps the most important being the “hunter.” The FBI identified the hunter as David Pece, a computer programmer who lived with his father in Highland Heights. Adam Ferrise reports that if Pece is convicted, he faces between 24 and 30 years in prison for conspiring to engage in the sexual exploitation of children. |

River history: The Old River Channel represents a special chapter in the history of the Cuyahoga River. In the late 18th century, when Cleveland’s first settler entered the river mouth from Lake Erie on a mission to plat a new village, the old channel was the river. Peter Krouse talks with experts and consults history books showing the mouth of the Cuyahoga once wasn’t clearly identifiable the way it is today. Restaurant closings: Unfortunately, Greater Cleveland lost a handful of restaurants over the last year, as economic challenges and other factors affected the industry. Marc Bona, Alex Darus and Paris Wolfe list 20 notable closings in 2023. Young businessman: Some people wait their whole lives before trying their hand at entrepreneurship. Jay Butcher got started when he was 8 years old. Sean McDonnell reports the now 9-year-old student at Falls-Lenox Primary School is making and selling products with his 3D printer. |

Shooting suspect: A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury handed up an indictment Wednesday for a Richmond Heights man accused of a quadruple shooting. Raymond Melton, 29, was indicted on charges of aggravated murder, felonious assault, attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder and having weapons under disability, Olivia Mitchell reports. Suspect arrested: A man wanted for an East Cleveland murder this year has been arrested, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. John Tucker reports Vernitez Bell, 36, is accused of the April 4 killing of 38-year-old Cleveland resident Domonick Allen. |
