1. CRUISES TO CUBA CANCELED BECAUSE OF NEW TRAVEL BAN: After the Trump administration revised travel regulations to Cuba, cruise lines including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian have started canceling cruises to the island. Earlier this week, the Trump administration banned cruises, private yachts, and fishing vessels from visiting Cuba. The New York Times: “The new regulations affect nearly 800,000 bookings that are scheduled or already underway, according to the Cruise Lines International Association, an industry group. These bookings were made under a license issued by the United States government that allowed ‘people to people’ travel to Cuba. This category has been banned by the new regulations. … When Carnival made its announcement, at least one of its ships, the Carnival Sensation, had been rerouted to Cozumel instead of Havana. It set sail from Miami on Monday. In 2016, Carnival was the first U.S. cruise company to sail to Cuba since the 1959 revolution.” 2. GRETCHEN CARSON RESIGNS AS MISS AMERICA CHAIRWOMAN: Gretchen Carlson, a TV journalist and former Miss America, has stepped down as the Miss American Organization chairwoman. Carlson was part of an all-women leadership team that took over the pageant following an email scandal in which male leaders disparaged former winners on their appearance, intelligence, and sex lives. Associated Press: “Carlson pushed for the elimination of the swimsuit competition from the pageant, which originated in Atlantic City nearly 100 years ago. In its place last year, contestants spoke about themselves, their goals, and how they planned to serve the community. … She will be replaced by Shantel Krebs, the former South Dakota secretary of state. Attorney Brenda Keith will be vice-chair. The location of this year’s pageant still has not been determined." 3. MASTERCHEF WILL LAUNCH CULINARY EVENTS AND POP-UPS: MasterChef, Fox’s summer reality cooking competition, is launching a series of culinary experiences and pop-ups to coincide with its 10th season, which premiered Wednesday. The series will feature contestants from across the U.S. at exclusive dinners, cooking classes, and food tours as part of a partnership with Eatwith, a company that specializes in culinary experiences. Pop-up events also will take place in New York and San Francisco. Adweek: “MasterChef, a billion-dollar brand with hot-selling cookbooks and scores of other licensed products, has already waded into this territory with themed cruises on Holland America for the flagship series. For its popular spinoff, MasterChef Junior, the first multi-market live tour kicks off in October; its second cookbook, devoted to baking, is on the horizon; and its successful Camp MasterChef program for 8- to 16-year-old aspiring Gordon Ramsays expands from two to five cities this summer.” |
