The Maine hospitals with no staff certified to do sexual assault exams
  • Most hospitals in Maine have at least one sexual assault forensic examiner, but currently five of the state’s 34 hospitals with emergency departments do not. When hospitals don’t staff these positions, they risk harming the progress of a criminal investigation and providing optimum physical and mental health care, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, which has studied the issue. The collection of DNA evidence has been shown to increase the likelihood of prosecution.

Rockland considers allowing marijuana stores downtown despite residents voting against it

  • In November 2018, through a non-binding referendum, Rockland voters said they did not want adult-use marijuana stores in downtown. Despite this vote, the regulations being considered by the City Council would allow retail marijuana stores to operate anywhere in the city, aside from residential zones. Councilors have pointed out it was a close vote with a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent.
  • Local historian and former Bangor Daily News writer and editorial page assistant Dick Shaw met Caroll Spinney — who died over the weekend after a career playing Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch — in 1980, while writing a profile of him for the BDN ahead of Spinney’s performance as Big Bird with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. The two hit it off, especially when Shaw learned of Spinney’s deep connection to Maine.
