Converting food waste to biofertiliser and electricity

The City is starting a three month commercial food waste trial, thanks to a State Government Community and Industry Engagement (CIE) grant.

Food waste from 20 local participating businesses will be sent to Richgro’s anaerobic digestion plant in Jandakot. It will generate high-quality biofertiliser and electricity (via methane capture) to go back into the electricity grid instead of landfill where it can cause harmful greenhouse gas.

The trial will help the City determine the benefits of a commercial food waste collection service to reduce costs and improve resource recovery levels. Results of the trial will be analysed and reported to Council. A decision will be made on future implementation if benefits of the trial can be proven.
