DecemberΒ 1, 2022Β Good morning.Β π€οΈ Starting with some happy news, legendary country singer Dolly Parton announced her intention to open a new museum in Nashville,Β Tennessee. It's set to be part of a "Dolly Center" that would also include a restaurant and bar. It's impossible to dislike Dolly Parton. Now to a detail that caught my attention in John Yau's review today of Astrid Dick'sΒ paintings. The artist says that a critic once told her she could not paint stripes because Sean Scully and Frank StellaΒ had already done so before her. She didn't name her interlocutor, but I'll go out on a limb and guess it was a male art critic. Here's my message to fellow art critics: Stop being so full of yourselves! You're not that important, or interesting, and your writing is rarely any good. Also today, our New York art guide for December is here, and so is our monthly Opportunities column. And Paddy Johnson answers the question: Do I still belong in the art world if I don't make art to sell? On a personal note, today I bought this pair ofΒ Piet Mondrian socksΒ from theΒ Hyperallergic store. I'll rock them tomorrow and see how the world reacts.
