Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
The Daily Wire

Conservative publisher The Daily Wire continues to dominate on Facebook, coming out on top once again in the first quarter of 2022.

Media monitoring company NewsWhip has put out their report on publishers with the highest engagement on Facebook, finding three of the top five media outlets on the social media giant are right-leaning.

The Daily Wire landed in the top spot with 98 million engagements since the beginning of the year, followed closely behind by NBC, which had 94 million.

The Daily Mail and Fox News came in third and fourth place with 80 and 57 million engagements – respectively. The BBC rounded out the top five with 56 million engagements since the beginning of the year.

The report notes that while Daily Wire finished number one again, engagement was down from Q4's 109 million. NBC also saw a drop, from 97 million to 94 million.

In an April blip, Daily Mail surpassed Daily Wire for the top spot for the month of March – the first time the Wire had been dethroned since 2020 - but it didn't unseat the site for the quarter.

The Daily Wire, co-founded in 2015 by Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing, has found unparalleled success on Facebook, which is one of the reasons the company announced it brought in over $100,000,000 in revenue in 2021.

NPR had reservations about Daily Wire’s success in a report last July, claiming it "produces little original reporting but instead mostly repackages journalism from traditional news organizations with a conservative slant.” But that didn't unseat the site, either.

There's still no real system of standardized "ratings" for internet publishing, decades into the model. But the industry, members of Congress, and even Russian intelligence operations see Facebook dominance as a major measure of a website's power and success. In that light, Daily Wire's continuing ownership of the space is a notable win.

MEDIA LOSER:

J.D. Vance appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight Wednesday, one day after winning the Republican nomination for Senate in Ohio. The political newbie used the Fox News platform to trash a Fox News contributor: Former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove.

Carlson noted Vance had previously been critical of Donald Trump, who ultimately endorsed him.

“What’s so interesting is that the rap against you was that you were a fraud,” said Tucker Carlson. “‘J.D. Vance was skeptical of Trump, now he’s all-in on Trump’s agenda.’ But if you were a fraud, they would’ve sent you money. My impression was they hated you because they suspected you were sincere.”

Vance agreed with the host’s assessment.

“I think that’s exactly right, Tucker,” Vance replied, who then took shots at Rove.

"If you think of some of my biggest enemies in this primary – you know the slimeball Karl Rove, who shipped a lot of American jobs overseas and got rich in the process, and also sent a lot of Americans to die in stupid conflicts,' said Vance. "You know, Karl Rove spent a lot of money, he wrote a lot of op-eds criticizing my candidacy, even called my donors after Trump endorsed me, encouraging them to drop my campaign."

So, in a lot of ways the what this revealed is that you have some very corrupt political consultants in the Republican Party who despise their own voters.

Carlson agreeably confirmed the slam, saying, “Yeah. Honesty is the essence I think of what people want.”

Rove has been a Fox News contributor since 2008.

It's gotta hurt to get burnt on your own network, and for its ratings star to nod along with that wrecking ball. For Gingrich, a Trumpist burn is the worst kind of on-network diss. But you really have to hand it to Vance for adding insult to injury. Nothing slaps harder than a giant flip-flop.

The A-Block

'Glitz, Glamour and Election Fraud'

Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza has a new movie out called 2000 Mules, which claims to document the vast election fraud conspiracy that former President Donald Trump has obsessed over since he lost the 2020 election.

D’Souza is one of the principle proponents of the fantastical theory that the election was stolen from Trump, a theory that has been dismissed repeatedly by courts, Republican leadership, and the sane factions of right wing media.

It is not clear if the film is a true “documentary” as D’Souza claims, or if it’s a fictional film presented in documentary format; that is a conversation for another day.

D’Souza has produced a number of conservative and conspiracy-friendly movies, none of which has had any critical acclaim outside of his fever-dream audience of …well, I’ve said too much. Fair to say his appeal is not mainstream.

Wednesday night, a “star-studded” premiere screening of the movie was held at Trump’s Palm Beach home Mar-a-Lago, and a great number of renowned conspiracy theorists were in attendance and posted photos of themselves on social media.

Trump appeared to speak before the screening of the movie, which was attended by the likes of Matt Gaetz, Michael Flynn, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jenna Ellis, Bernard Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, Lara Logan, Kyle Rittenhouse, Andrew Giuliani, Dan Bongino, Dave Rubin, and of course, D’Souza himself.

Photos and videos ensued, and Colby Hall has the whole mess here.

'You Insulting Punk!'

Debate on Fox News’ The Five got heated on Wednesday, as Geraldo Rivera and Greg Gutfeld exchanged unpleasantries while discussing abortion.

Rivera, who is pro-choice, slammed Republicans who have reacted to the Roe v. Wade story by expressing outrage at the leak instead of at the impact it will have on women. He also accused Justices Neil GorsuchBrett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett of lying at their Senate nomination hearings about how they view Roe.

It got very personal very quickly.

You don't hear "punk" too often these days. No word yet on whether Gutfeld had to get off any lawns.
