Lawmakers don't seem keen on special session to rewrite tax system

Gov. Jeff Landry wanted lawmakers to call themselves into a special session to rewrite the state's tax system and put the revised document before voters in November or December. That apparently is not going to happen.

“It’s very unlikely we have another session this year,” said Senate President Cameron Henry, R-Metairie.

LaMont Cole and Adam Smith are longtime friends. Now they will work together to improve the East Baton Rouge school system, Cole as superintendent and Smith as deputy superintendent. Cole said Thursday that being superintendent represents “the most important work of my lifetime.”

Steven Harris IV was a student at Southern University and a member of the heralded Human Jukebox Marching Band. Authorities now say three people lured him to his death in Mississippi, where he was shot multiple times. The trio have been arrested, and those who knew Harris are left to grieve.

"We're definitely going to miss him. I'm going to miss him," said Kedric Taylor, the Human Jukebox's director.
