On December 11, the Colorado Springs D-11 School District Board informed the local teachers union that they would not be renewing the master agreement. D-11 is the only school district in El Paso County that currently has a collective bargaining agreement. It is important to note that this board is not anti-teacher; four of the seven board members are or have been teachers themselves.
During the meeting, it was emphasized multiple times that such a contract gives a private corporation significant power without accountability. In contrast, the school board is accountable to the voters in the district and should not be hindered by a private corporation when striving to improve the education system. You can watch the meeting here.
The Education Policy Center has laid the foundation for collective bargaining reform since 2000. Our staff has actively written policy papers, made media appearances, met with school board members, and delivered presentations that expose the union's abuse of power while advocating for essential reforms. Our long-term work helps make these victories possible.
