September, the ninth month of the year, has 30 days, and marks the beginning of the school year for many of us. It is also the month when we officially transition from summer to fall, with the equinox arriving on September 23 at 3:50 a.m.
Most of the country can expect cooler-than-normal temperatures throughout autumn, with a few exceptions, and this starts off in September. The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that the Upper Midwest will see the highest temperature change, with an average temperature of 54°F, which is 4 degrees below average. Most regions, however, including the Northeast, Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, and Lower Lakes, are predicted to only be 1 degree below normal. In Florida, Alaska, and Pacific Northwest and Southwest, temperatures are predicted to be slightly above average by a range of 1 to 3 degrees.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac—America’s oldest and most popular almanac—uses a unique, age-old formula that’s traditionally 80% accurate. Our weather forecasts methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by our founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792.
Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in our offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, we have refined and enhanced this formula with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. For example, our overall accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature change from normal for the 2018–2019 winter was 88.9%. |

| The Full Moon in September | September’s full Moon was called the Corn Moon by both the Algonquin tribes and colonial Americans. The Native Americans used the monthly Moons and nature’s signs as a sort of calendar to track the seasons. Why this name? Back then, this was the time to harvest corn. The September full Moon was also sometimes called the Harvest Moon because this is the time of year when crops such as corn, pumpkins, squash, and wild rice were ready for gathering. Interestingly, though, the Harvest Moon can also come in October, depending on which full Moon occurs closest to the autumnal equinox.
Based on the Moon’s sign and phase in September, the best time to harvest is from the 7th to the 9th for aboveground crops and on the 17th and 18th for those below ground. Additionally, it’s helpful to know that during a waxing Moon, pruning encourages growth; during a waning Moon, it discourages growth.
How about fishing? Or setting eggs? These commonly range in color from light to dark blue but may form in a rainbow of other colors. And, in fact, you know the red-hued corundum as the ruby.
The sapphire was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning, and it was believed that it could kill a spider or venomous snake. Additionally, the mineral symbolizes purity and wisdom and was, therefore, a favorite stone of priests and kings.
