More than three years after the Standing Rock protests, a judge ordered the Dakota Access pipeline to shutdown

In a historic defeat for the Trump administration, a federal judge in Washington ordered a complete shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Judge James Boasberg found the US government violated federal environmental law when it approved construction without a full environmental study.

The ruling is a long-awaited win for Native American tribes that have fought the pipeline in court, arguing it could cause serious environmental harm to a large lake that spans the border of North and South Dakota.

After the Obama administration paused the project in 2016 amid large demonstrations near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, the Trump administration reversed the decision and allowed construction to proceed.

Now, Judge Boasberg has given the pipeline company 30 days to empty the pipeline and shut it down by Aug. 5. The Trump administration could appeal the judge’s decision.

Miami is shutting down restaurants and gyms again because coronavirus infections are skyrocketing

Just a month after reopening restaurants and gyms, Miami is shutting them down again after the city’s rate of coronavirus infection went through the roof.

Miami-Dade County, which covers Miami, Miami Beach, and the Everglades, has had an average of 1,900 cases per day, a 229% increase from just 14 days ago.

Miami reopened on May 27, and restaurants could only be open at 50% capacity. But even with the reduced capacity, Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez said the spread has continued from gatherings of people inside, noting how many of the positive cases have been young people.

Some schools are now online-only due to coronavirus. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says their international students must leave the US. ICE suggested the students transfer to a school offering in-person courses to maintain their legal status in the US.

Amy Cooper is facing charges after she called the cops on a black man who was bird-watching. She was captured in a video that went viral, telling police that the man, Christian Cooper, had threatened her life. She has been charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree.

These teens making a TikTok found human remains on a Seattle beach. The teens stumbled upon a suitcase while using the app Randonautica, which sends users random coordinates as a means of exploration. Seattle police confirmed that the teens had found human remains and said the group has since been interviewed.

Atlanta mayor (and possible Joe Biden VP pick) Keisha Lance Bottoms has tested positive for COVID-19. Bottoms, who has gained national attention for her response to police killings, tweeted that she had no symptoms when she tested positive.

A BuzzFeed News/Ipsos survey conducted the last week of May revealed that most people report their sex lives have remained unchanged since shelter in place orders began. Thirty-eight percent of Americans report never having sex in an average week since stay-at-home orders began in early March, compared to 33% who reported the same before the pandemic.
