Dear Reader,
The Brexit deal might have been done, but it doesn’t cover a rather significant part of the UK’s economy: the financial sector. How the City will be treated by Brussels is yet to be decided, and last night Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, responding to a question from The Telegraph, warned that the EU was preparing to cut Britain off. Our reporters have the details of what he said and why it matters here.
The return of the Six Nations has brought a welcome distraction during the lockdown, but it has also brought out some of the worst in social media users. Maggie Alphonsi, a Telegraph columnist, has received much sexist abuse for her appearances on television covering the rugby. She has written a powerful response to those whose prejudice overwhelms any rational thought.
The rugby, like all sports at the moment, took place in front of empty stands, with not even royalty permitted at Twickenham. Instead, Princess Anne, Scottish Rugby patron, watched from home and released a photo of the occasion. That image, writes Christina Hopkinson, offered a glorious glimpse into the upper-class living room and revealed a key difference in the way the posh organise their homes.
Finally, it would be natural to assume that lockdown has all but killed off new romance. But that’s not quite the case. In this lovely piece, Lorna Prichard tells the charming story of how she not only met someone in lockdown, but agreed to marry him just a few weeks later.
Chris
