Makes A Difference

Art can help us to process and understand our experiences during times of collective trauma. Following hurricanes Florence and Matthew, CAM helped children in Columbus County to reflect of their experiences. Through an artist residency, students made vessels that helped them to talk about what they felt during these storms, through art. One student wrote about her experience in this class, "On the inside of my vessel the shapes were about what I heard outside, the sound of trees swishing. The swirls inside are the swooshing of the trees and wind. I have trees on the outside because they represent when the tree fell down, and the women on the front represent family. The door represents when our family couldn't leave. My work does share emotion and memories of what happened during the storm when my family came down."
CAM Art-Making Classes
Like these hurricanes, the COVID-19 crisis has also impacted our entire community, and CAM's education team is working to connect and support students and teachers. In March, CAM pivoted quickly to move programming online, offering free virtual family programs, meditation for stress reduction, lesson plans, and virtual programs with staff, curators, and artists. CAM has 8 virtual exhibitions on its website and is working closely with local school systems to supplement virtual learning through virtual tours, virtual art-making classes, and resources for parents and teachers. The education team is putting together art kits to distribute to children that live in Wilmington Housing Authority's communities and has plans for outreach projects for children in need.

One teacher writes, "The staff at Cameron Art Museum have been great! They consistently seek funding opportunities to help our low socio-economic students have opportunities for exposure they may not otherwise get."
CAM Art-Making Classes
Your donation makes a difference. Your donation of $50 will allow 5 children to experience a virtual tour and art-making class or will help CAM to put together art bags for 5 children in need. Your donation of $100 will allow 10 children to experience a virtual tour and art-making class or will help CAM put together art bags for 10 children in need. We can't do it without you. Please give today to help CAM's educational team continue this important work.
