How and When to Offer SHOP Insurance to Your Employees

Open Enrollment is right around the corner, but you can enroll your small business in Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) coverage year-round. Follow the steps below to start your plan today:

  1. Get help from an agent or broker: SHOP-registered agents and brokers can guide you through the decision-making process and help you enroll. Visit Find Local Help to find an agent or broker near you.
  2. Verify your eligibility: You’ll need to verify that you’re eligible to participate in SHOP. See if your small business qualifies for SHOP.
  3. Select your SHOP plan: When picking a plan, you’ll want to consider the monthly cost, deductible, provider network, and prescription drug coverage. Your insurance company or agent or broker can assist you with important enrollment steps or application deadlines. Click the button below to use the See Plans & Prices tool to compare SHOP plans.
  4. Pay premiums and manage coverage: The last step is to pay your premium to your insurance company. You’ll also work with your insurance company to make changes—like adding or removing an employee—throughout the year.
