Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jack Dorsey

Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey announced that he will donate $1 billion of his personal fortune to relief efforts against the coronavirus.

One billion dollars.

Scores of public figures have donated to Covid-19 relief efforts already, though Dorsey’s contribution stands out for not only its dollar amount, but also its cut into his overall net worth — estimated to be around $3 billion. Jeff Bezos, by comparison, said he would donate $100 million to the non-nonprofit group Feeding America.

Dorsey, in a thread on Twitter, addressed several points about his commitment, including why he was making it so publicly, why he selected the particular distribution, and what he hopes will happen in the future from others of such means.

"Why the transparency? It’s important to show my work so I and others can learn," he wrote. Adding in other tweet, "I hope this inspires others to do something similar."

He also explained that it was an ongoing pledge, and that "after we disarm this pandemic," the money will be shifted to focus on "girl’s health and education" and UBI (Universal Basic Income), garnering him praise from, among many tech and political leaders, former Dem primary candidate Andrew Yang.

It's good PR. In the sense that is PR for being good. And hopefully
this decision and his explanation
of it does indeed inspire others in a position to do so to contribute greatly to the fight against this pandemic, and against future pandemics as well.
MEDIA LOSER:
Fox Nation's Diamond & Silk

This is a second appearance in the Green Room for Fox Nation hosts Diamond & Silk, having made it last week for a viral clip in which they questioned the veracity of reporting on deaths from Covid-19.

On Wednesday, the two were once again the subject of controversy for suggesting a new solution to the coronavirus crisis.

That advice? Break quarantine.

"The only way we can become immune to the environment; we must be out in the environment, a tweet from their official account stated. "Quarantining people inside of their houses for extended periods will make people sick!"

Fox News licenses Diamond & Silk’s content for their streaming network Fox Nation, after the duo earned the attention of Trump and began appearing on the network’s top programs.

A Twitter spokesperson told Mediaite that the duo were locked out of their account as a result of the tweet. The tweet was deleted, allowing the pair to regain access to the account. In the meantime, media figures blasted the duo for their dubious recommendation.

David Corn of Mother Jones and MSNBC commented, via Twitter, in emphatic format: "This. Will. Get. People. Killed." Because it's dangerous advice, counter even to White House policy.

With the pair violating not just social media policy, but recommending violating national policy, it must raise a question for Fox Nation about how many such incidents can be weathered before it's no longer worth it?

The A-Block

Sanders Suspends

Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announced on Wednesday that he is suspending his 2020 campaign and ending his pursuit of the presidency.

“The greatest obstacle to real social change has everything to do with the power of the corporate and political establishment to limit our vision as to what is possible and what we are entitled to as human beings,” Sanders said. “I want to express to each of you my deep gratitude for helping to create an unprecedented grassroots political campaign that has had a profound impact in changing our nation.”

Sanders added that he will be working with former Vice President Joe Biden towards the defeat of President Donald Trump, and advancing progressive goals. “Today I congratulate Joe Biden, a very decent man who I will work with to move our progressive ideas forward,” Sanders said.

CNN"s John King must not have been listening too closely, though. He missed that part and claimed instead that Sanders didn't praise or promise to work with Biden at all.

Sanders did say, however, he would remain on the ballot in order to have some pull at the convention.

“I will stay on the ballot in all remaining states and continue to gather delegates," he said, citing the need to "exert significant influence over the party platform."

Linda Tripp

Linda Tripp — a former civil servant at the White House and the Pentagon who is most famous for recording conversations she had with Monica Lewinsky about the affair between Lewinsky and former President Bill Clinton — has died at the age of 70.

'Four years of darkness'

Progressive internet star Cenk Uygur delivered a post-mortem on Bernie Sanders’ campaign minutes after it ended, in which he said that the progressive candidate's exit portends “four years of darkness” for the country, whether it is Trump or Biden who ultimately wins.

'Tens of thousands will die'

MSNBC national affairs analyst John Heilemann said on the network's Deadline: White House on Wednesday that "there are tens of thousands of people who will die" in this country as a result of President Trump's "incompetence and lack of leadership."

Cash for controversy

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) announced that she will liquidate her individual stock share positions amid criticism for the sales she made throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

I have a national scandal and I need cash now. Call J.G. Liquidate, 877-TOO-LATE.

Fifty to EIGHTY percent!?

Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimated in a new report that if New York adopted a stay-at-home order sooner, the state’s death toll could have been reduced by 50- 80 percent.

Now we wait for reporters to grill Gov. Andrew Cuomo about this. Perhaps MSNBC national affairs analyst John Heilemann would like to go first?

Bye Corona

Former CNN contributor, ex-RNC spokesperson, erstwhile Trump campaign flack and current White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany has a long record of distinguished service to the cable news churn, so before she takes her new post and is never heard from again, a tribute is in order.

And Mediaite's Tommy Christopher has put together just such a tribute, featuring some of her greatest hits, including her coronavirus prophecy and more!

Must-See Clip(s) of the Day

3k gloves, 1k head covers, and one amazing kid

TJ Kim, a 16 year old pilot-in-training, flies much needed medical supplies and protective equipment to hospitals in rural Virginia each week amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The high school student from Mclean, VA titled the service “Operation SOS — Supplies Over Skies” and flies equipment to hospitals during each of his lessons.

This is a terrific story, and watching this young man explain it is inspirational.
