Canada reported more than 10,653 new cases on Monday, including 2,960 for the past three days in British Columbia. B.C. announced the imminent implementation of inter-region travel restrictions in an effort to curb the spread and growth of COVID-19. In addition to random checks, Premier John Horgan is asking the tourism industry to not accept bookings from people outside their region and he said that BC Ferries would stop taking bookings for anyone with recreational vehicles. British Columbia is now averaging more than 1,000 cases of COVID-19 a day and its per capita rate is 211.3 per million population, up from 151.4 at the beginning of the month. In addition, the number of residents in hospital with COVID-19 is on pace to more than double in April, having gone from 296 on April 1 to 441 on April 19, according to COVID-19 Canada Tracker. On April 20, Peel Region, home to many of the country’s warehousing, distribution and manufacturing businesses, announced that its medical officer of health was using his “Section 22” powers “to direct all businesses with five or more linked COVID-19 cases in the previous 14 days to close for 10 days.” The region has more than 400 workplace outbreaks, and has used its powers in recent weeks to close sites of large outbreaks, including one Amazon warehouse.
