Kiln, a new American bistro from chef Doug Katz, ready for its debut in Shaker Heights (photos) 

Doug Katz, chef/owner of Amba and Zhug restaurants, has come home. With his business partner Todd Thompson, he’s opening a restaurant next week in the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights, the community where he grew up. The location and the restaurant are personal. Kiln reflects things close to Katz’s heart – the neighborhood, sourcing locally, handmade pottery and, of course, food. Cleveland.com’s Paris Wolfe talked with Katz and Thompson about the restaurant, which is slated to open next week. READ MORE 

 

Akronym Brewing closing 

Weeks after announcing their Medina brewery outpost would close, the owners of Akronym Brewing in Akron said the flagship location also would shut down. A social post cited “too many obstacles” for the brewery to overcome. READ MORE 

 

Ritz-Carlton’s new chef brings global influences to Turn Bar + Kitchen 

Manikandan “Mani” Ramalingam is the new executive chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland. He oversees TURN Bar + Kitchen, the signature restaurant “hidden” on the 6th floor. From India, he has mastered the art of blending spices and with local flavors for his menus.  Cleveland is different from most locations. “Cleveland has a mix of all cultures,” he said. “Now, it’s up to me to decide what I want on the menu.” READ MORE

Cleveland Whiskey to host grand opening events in new Flats location 

Cleveland Whiskey has officially opened its new location in The Flats to the public. Cleveland Whiskey will host a second open house celebration at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on October 26. For $10 a person, folks get a chance to check out the new production facility and tasting room at 601 Stones Levee Road. Admission also includes a whiskey tasting, complimentary cocktail, light refreshments and free parking. READ MORE 

 

Edda Coffee, Good Pizza team up for pizza, espresso martini pop-up 

Edda Coffee Roasters in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood is hosting an after-hours pop-up event with Good Pizza. Edda After Dark is set from 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, at Edda Coffee Roasters at 2011 W. 25th Street. Edda will be serving signature espresso martinis alongside beer, wine and cocktails. 2 breweries win big at Great American Beer Festival 

Masthead Brewing Co. and Noble Beast Brewing Co., which sit about four blocks apart in downtown Cleveland, each won medals at the recent blind-judged Great American Beer Festival. Gervasi Spirits' Pink Peppercorn gin wins big

Gervasi Spirits’ Pink Peppercorn Gin was named Best in Class in the Flavored Gin category at the prestigious 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Pink Peppercorn Gin also received the prestigious double gold medal recognition in April. READ MORE

 

Cleveland Restaurant Week is coming up 

Cleveland Independents’ Cleveland Restaurant Week is coming up. The week, which promotes locally owned restaurants, is scheduled for Nov. 11-22. It will feature mostly $39, three-course, prix-fixe dinners at nearly 30 independent restaurants. The annual promotion helps kick off the holiday season for the member restaurants. Flight Social opens in former Chocolate Bar space in Cleveland 

Flight Social has taken over the space formerly known as The Chocolate Bar. Just four blocks east of Public Square and next to The Arcade on Euclid Avenue, the new restaurant and entertainment venue opened on October 9. Jacory Stone says he and his business partner Rob Ward--who is a traveling, standup comedian--started working on the concept and began looking for the right space about three years ago. Once they found the Euclid Avenue storefront, they negotiated the lease and started cosmetic changes in May. READ MORE

 

Empanadas Errthang food truck wins over Northeast Ohio with innovative flavors 

Empanadas Errthang is one of the newest food trucks in Northeast Ohio looking to expand folks’ idea of what an empanada can be. The Green Kitchen vegan restaurant in Cleveland closes

The Green Kitchen, a vegan restaurant that started as a pop-up concept, has announced it will be permanently closed. The restaurant at 3182 W. 25th Street in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood opened at the end of 2023. Chef and owner John Hagerty began the concept as a pop-up kitchen at Little Rose Tavern in West Park. READ MORE  

 

Honeygrow adds 2nd location in NE Ohio 

Philadelphia-based Honeygrow recently entered the Ohio market with a fast-casual eatery in Strongsville. Now the noodle-stir-fry restaurant is in North Canton as well. It has a create-your-own stir-fry option among its menu offerings. READ MORE

Wine 4 Life  

Wine 4 Life is a fundraiser that raises money to fight rare cancer. The event, to be held at The Madison in downtown Cleveland, is Saturday, Oct. 18. More than 20 wines have been curated for tasting at the event, which will include hors d’oeuvres, desserts and a wine pull where every bottle is valued at $50 or above. READ MORE 

 

Rosewood Grill dinner coming up 

Rosewood Grill locations in Strongsville and Westlake are holding a Great Lakes Brewing Co.-vs.-Watershed Distillery pairing dinner on Sunday, Oct. 20. Patrons can choose between a beer from the Cleveland brewery or a drink from the Columbus distillery to go with assorted dishes. READ MORE 

 

Opus One dinner set at Dante 

Dante in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood is holding a six-course dinner featuring acclaimed and favorite Opus One wines. Secret Supper Club murder-mystery dinner

Heinen’s 

When you think of Heinen’s you think grocery store, but the downtown Cleveland location also offers a great respite for a wrap, sandwich or salad on the first-floor seating area. A curved bar and several tables form the center of the area. It makes for a great centralized location for lunch and a cup of coffee on your way to a parking garage, business meeting or other appointment.
