| IMPORTANT | | | Musical Chairs | Lead Minister Resigns as Chaos Continues in UK Can Prime Minister Liz Truss survive the latest hit to her embattled government? In scenes reminiscent of the recent downfall of former PM Boris Johnson, Truss has lost her second high-profile minister in less than a week. Home Secretary Suella Braverman blamed a “technical” breach of governance: “I have concerns about the direction of this government,” she wrote in her resignation letter. Fractures within the governing Conservatives have gone public, with scores of Tory MPs telling media that the government is in crisis and others tweeting in agreement. Braverman will be replaced by Grant Shapps, who previously noted Truss’ grip on leadership is struggling. (Sources: The Guardian, Reuters) |

| | Not for Turning | Martial Law Declared in Russian-Occupied Areas of Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin declared martial law in Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk in an attempt to wrangle the regions, even as he loses territory back to Ukraine. Martial law also extends powers to detain undocumented immigrants and others for up to 30 days. Ukrainians have fortified for a new stage of conflict. “We aren’t afraid because we aren’t just prepared logistically; we are morally prepared,” one Kyiv resident said days after blasts rattled the capital and killed three. | | But, His Emails! | Judge Rules Trump Must Release Voter Fraud Emails Emails between former President Donald Trump and his attorney John Eastman must be handed over to investigators, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter ruled Wednesday. The emails confirm that Trump was involved in “a conspiracy to defraud the United States,” with his claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election. Eastman unsuccessfully argued the emails were covered by lawyer-client privilege. “The emails show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers,” Carter wrote. Eastman must also hand over emails pushing to have then-Vice President Mike Pence overturn election results. (Sources: CNN, USAToday) |

| | Shut It Down | China’s ‘Zero Covid’ Policy Pressures Congress Meeting Authorities in Beijing have stepped up COVID-19 measures in recent days as the 10-day case count quadrupled to 197. While the city is home to 21 million, there are fears an outbreak could disrupt the once-every-five-years Communist Party Congress, held this week in the capital. Apartment blocks with reported cases have been locked down for at least a three-day period. Popular pushback has been increasing in recent weeks, but with President Xi Jinping expected to be elected for an unprecedented third term as party leader, Beijing won’t be taking any chances. “Ensure that no one is overlooked,” one official said. | INTRIGUING | | Contagion | Black Death Changed Some Londoners’ Genome Forever When the Black Death struck London in 1348, the death rate from the disease was up to 50%. Many of the dead were buried in a mass grave designated by King Edward III and remained there for centuries until University of Chicago researchers had an idea. By testing the remains against those of plague survivors, they found a mutation that gave carriers a 40% boost in survival odds. The ERAP2 mutation is still found in descendants today, and carriers often have higher immunity. While the data comes from white Europeans, researchers think further studies could reveal more about how pandemics change the human genome. (Source: NPR) |

| | Cyber Insecurity | Australian Celebs Targeted in Health Care Hack Unidentified hackers have told Australia’s largest health insurer to pay up or they will leak details — including health records — of high-profile customers. In a message to Medibank, the hackers demanded an undisclosed sum while threatening to release data belonging to politicians, actors, bloggers and LGBTQ activists. “I apologize and understand this latest distressing update will concern our customers,” Medibank CEO David Koczkar said. It’s the second large-scale data breach at an Australian company in as many months, sparking concerns over Australia’s cybersecurity capabilities. Optus, the country’s second-largest telecom, announced in September that potentially millions of Australians had their personal details exposed. (Sources: Gizmodo, SMH) |

| | No Home for Hate | Famed Manager Calls for Business Boycott on Kanye “Hatred and antisemitism should have no place in our society, no matter how much money is at stake,” wrote Ari Emanuel, CEO of Endeavor media, in an op-ed Wednesday. He called on business partners, from Spotify to Adidas, to back away from Kanye West until he apologizes for recent hate-filled screeds. But Emanuel hasn’t written off the beleaguered superstar just yet: “We are all capable of learning and evolving,” he wrote, offering to educate West on the history of antisemitism and introduce him to religious leaders. Emanuel similarly reached out to actor Mel Gibson following his xenophobic rants in 2006. (Sources: Hollywood Reporter, FT) |

| | Benched | Ohio’s ‘Game Show Host’ Judge Suspended No Casual Tuesday dress codes in Ohio’s judicial system. Cleveland Municipal Judge Pinkey S. Carr was placed on indefinite leave by the state’s Supreme Court for misconduct ranging from falsifying court documents to wearing a tank top and shorts while presiding. Court investigators say Carr held court “in a manner befitting a game show host,” including chatting with defendants about the Mississippi strip club drama P-Valley. Her own attorney conceded her bench resembled “a flea market” and was littered with detritus. More damaging are accusations that she joked about accepting kickbacks from defendants. Carr has agreed to undergo physical and mental evaluations. (Source: Yahoo) |

| | | White Ice | NHL Diversity Review Finds Much Work to Be Done Of the NHL’s workforce, 83.6% are white and 62% are male, an internal report revealed. The findings come from a voluntary internal survey, with around 67% participating. Kim Davis, the NHL’s executive vice president of social impact, growth and legislative affairs, called the results a “baseline” for further efforts. Results will now be used by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport to produce a report card that will eventually influence hiring procedures. The report doesn’t come as a shock to many in the NHL, nor to supporters, with hockey attracting predominantly white fans and athletes. (Source: AP) |
