Clinical references policy and procedure

In the past, institutions often relied on references supplied solely by the applicant for clinical privileges. Today, it is generally recommended (and, in some instances, required) that the institution identify the specific individuals from whom it wishes to receive a reference. References are expected to have direct knowledge of a practitioner’s competencies and ability to safely exercise requested privileges. Organizations are encouraged to develop a policy outlining its rules for clinical references.
