From the desk of Dr. Richard Pinson, MD |
| Dear Reader:
We are both very excited about this year’s 2018 CDI Pocket Guide. Each year we review all content, and research, revise, and clarify each topic of the CDI Pocket Guide to ensure all the latest clinical criteria, coding advice, and guidelines are incorporated each year. | | | |

This year we did a major re-write of the respiratory failure section to include more valuable information for a clearer understanding of the clinical and coding concepts, and added a new topic for acute pediatric respiratory failure. Sepsis content has been updated and the Sepsis-3 section has much more detail including the actual SOFA organ dysfunction table. Important clinical and coding standards for the specific types of MI (1-5) were added; type 2 MI is especially interesting and important.
There’s a lot of exciting new Coding Clinic advice that has been incorporated into each section, and the ICD-10 and Official Coding Guidelines changes are analyzed and thoroughly explained. We have also included more content regarding HCCs and risk adjustment and an updated list of the most important HCC conditions and weights as you consider expanding your CDI program to capture HCCs in the inpatient or outpatient setting.
Much more new and important information is included that we believe you’ll find eye-opening and valuable. We greatly appreciate the reception all of you have given to each annual edition of our CDI Pocket Guide. We believe it just keeps getting better every year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Richard D. Pinson, MD, FACP, CCS, and Cynthia L. Tang, RHIA, CCS |
