We're down to the wire for not only the Fantasy Baseball season (mostly just those of you in Roto leagues at this point), but also the end of the baseball season with playoff seeding and berths on the line. Wednesday's action in the Fantasy world brought scoreless work for three pitchers you almost definitely have in your lineups -- but there were concerns attached to those outings that we'll go over. We found out several players are now on the IL and may not play again in 2021 including Ke'Brayn Hayes, Michael Brantley and possibly Salvador Perez (yet to reach the IL, but diagnosed with a right ankle sprain). |
We also saw two of Fantasy Baseball's best hitters in Joey Votto and Nick Castellanos sitting on Wednesday following the Reds' elimination from playoff contention. For those of you holding out hope of seeing Shohei Ohtani on the mound again this season, he will not pitch again -- so rule that out. Of course, the not-so-future AL MVP did manager to pick up another two stolen bases on Wednesday. And of course, the news of the day belongs to Brewers setup man Devin Williams who injured his own self off the field. |
Let's dive into all the action. |
Of course, as always, you can follow to make sure you get the latest episodes of Fantasy Baseball Today right when they drop on Apple and Spotify. |

Williams fractures his own hand off the mound |
|
In arguably the whackiest news we've had this MLB season, Brewers RP Devin Williams was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right hand that will require surgery. How did he do it? According to Williams' own hazy recollection of the events, he had too much to drink while celebrating on Sunday and ultimately got upset with something happening around him so he decided to punch a wall with his pitching hand. |
Now sobered up, Williams was remorseful and told reporters, "If I could take it back, I would." He can't in fact take it back and now Milwaukee has to take on the postseason without their second-best reliever. |

A pair of not-so-impressive shutouts |
White Sox SP Carlos Rodon returned to the mound on Wednesday and put together what looks like an impressive outing on paper but wasn't actually very impressive at all. Rodon threw five shutout innings against the Reds (who were without Votto and Castellanos) and he allowed one hit and just two walks. However, Rodon's velocity was down a full five miles per hour in this one! The lefty has battled through shoulder injuries this season and didn't make it deep into his last start before this one. Still, Rodon finishes with a sparkling 2.37 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 185 strikeouts and 36 walks this season over 132 2/3 innings. The breakout Fantasy ace is the topic of concerning conversations among White sox fans heading into the postseason. |
Brewers SP Andrew Houser held the Cardinals scoreless and snapped their 17-game winning streak in a 4-0 Brewers win on Wednesday. Houser got through five innings scoreless but they weren't pretty. He got out of a bases loaded jam right away in the first innings and he struck out just one batter with just three induced swinging strikes the entire outing. Houser finishes his breakthrough second half with a 2.43 ERA since the All-Star break. |
Wood caps off surprise bounceback season |
It was a nice surprise to see Giants SP Alex Wood bounceback in his age-30 season and just another piece to the puzzle that is the San Francisco Giants -- baseball's unexpected winningest team. Wood struck out six batters oversix scoreless innings against Arizona on Wednesday. He threw 58 of his 74 pitches for strikes and that's all he needed to get through six. He walked three batters but also generated 11 swinging strikes -- truly impressive swing-and-miss stuff on the night. Wood finishes his bounceback season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 152 strikeouts (in 138 1/3 innings). |
