DRDGOLD has outgunned the rest

When the gold price is going up, DRDGOLD tends to deliver the best returns in the market. The reverse is also true, as this is a tailings business that has the most operating leverage out of any of the listed companies in the gold sector. In simple terms, this means that the margins are the thinnest on a normal day, so a significant move in the gold price has a much bigger impact on net profit. If you've been reading Ghost Bites recently, you would've also seen this concept in a company like Astral Foods, which operates in the poultry industry.

The rule is simple: a low net profit margin creates a receipt for erratic changes in profitability.

Yesterday's news also included a bloody nose for Redefine on the market, with a drop in the dividend not being welcomed by investors. In happier news, there's some good stuff out of South32 and Orion Minerals in the mining sector, along with a trading statement from Barloworld. I also noted the capital raise at Eastern Platinum.

There's only one place to get updated on all the news with a single click: Ghost Bites.

Looking ahead to US inflation

Risk sentiment has remained unfavourable for emerging markets, with the focus on the US inflation print coming up on Wednesday. Inflation is expected to have eased to 5.5% in April. Gold stabilised above $2,020 and oil prices increased by over 1.5% on the back of expected OPEC+ production cuts. In good news for PGMs, both p alladium and platinum traded higher as well.
