La voile est un rêve: Sailing the St. Lawrence |
|
“As sailcloth catches the wind, a boat cuts through water. It’s an image from my childhood — sailing with my Grandad in northern England, where I grew up. I’ve always romanticized sailing, but it’s been a long time since I climbed aboard a sailboat. So a trip to Montreal to sail the waters around the island feels like a second chance — a “seagoing” homecoming of sorts and a chance to reconnect with my grandparents from across the sea ...”

Swimming with manatees in Crystal River, Florida |
|
“Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a manatee calf swims towards me. I practice the ‘freeze and float’ technique and stay perfectly still. The baby brushes my wetsuit with his prickly nose. A metre and a half long and weighing about 180 kilograms, he is one of the friendliest and most curious creatures I have ever encountered. His eyes are cloudy blue, his skin reminiscent of an elephant’s: thick, greyish brown, wrinkled and covered in hundreds of coarse body hairs. ”
For travel journalist Marina Jimenez, this close encounter with a baby manatee was a peak experience. Read more about these remarkable creatures and their unique spring-fed habitat on Florida’s Gulf Coast. |

Some say that visiting Albania is as close as you’ll get to traveling back in time. It wasn’t until the collapse of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania in 1991 that the world got its first glimpse of the country within. You’ll get a firsthand look at this previously isolated country accompanied by bestselling author, renowned lecturer, and CEO of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, John Geiger. Geiger is the co-author, with Owen Beattie, of the international bestseller Frozen in Time, which introduced the world to the tragic events surrounding the 1845-1848 Franklin Expedition. His book The Third Man Factor: Surviving the Impossible is the basis for the National Geographic Channel documentary Explorer: The Angel Effect, in which Geiger appears. In 2021, Geiger was awarded membership in the Order of Canada. You can be sure he has plenty of stories to share throughout your 10-day adventure. |

The meat and potatoes of Quebec’s beloved tourtière |
|
Tourtière is Quebec’s fattier, gamier and, arguably, tastier answer to the English minced meat pie. Spices, potatoes and a variety of meats, sometimes including wild game like moose or hare, are packed in a tender golden pie crust. Like the Quebecois accent itself, tourtière’s flavours vary by region — and everyone has strong opinions about it.
