There’s little doubt that data-intensive reality mapping technology is making projects from bridge inspections to movie shoots safer and more efficient.
Reality mapping captures detailed images and video of the current state of an object or a location and uses software to explore it and make recommendations. It’s being used to inspect bridges, dams, and other structures to look for small cracks that could portend trouble. AI applied to the images and data can even detect rust and determine if it’s cause for concern. Manufacturers are using it to keep tabs on hard-to-reach equipment, and movie studios are using it to capture a set, so they know everything is exactly in place to continue filming.
But when you take all the possible use cases for reality mapping and add them to the growing collection of technologies available—including robot-mounted lidar, autonomous drones, 360 cameras, and more—the most common question in every industry is, What’s the best technology for my use case?
To see reality mapping in action, check out this episode of Oracle TV’s Industry Innovations, where host Burcin Kaplanoglu talks with three reality mapping experts about real-world use cases. You will see an autonomous drone flight and learn how that data is processed by Oracle products to provide insights and drive actions. “We gathered all the details about how the data is captured, what it took in terms of cost and time, and how they map back to use cases,” says Kaplanoglu.
