Gov. Tim Walz said he is inclined to believe police reports of alleged domestic violence against a St. Paul legislator, as pressure for him to resign continued. 

First term DFLer John Thompson initially said a Fourth of July traffic stop by St. Paul police was racial profiling. But scrutiny of his past increased when police found him with a Wisconsin drivers’ license. Fox 9 recently reported on allegations of domestic violence. 

Thompson’s attorney has questioned the details. But Walz said similar incidents, among multiple police agencies and over a number of years, lend some credibility to the reports.  

"I’m not an expert on this. I guess time will tell," he said. "But my inclination is that I have not seen a case where that has happened, so I would assume that these are as they are presented to us."

Walz said the DFL Party and the news media should have discovered the allegations when Thompson ran for the party nomination last year. 

Republicans had threatened to file an ethics complaint against Thompson as soon as today, but held off, calling for DFLers to take action in their own ranks. 

Canadian officials say they'll start letting vaccinated visitors from the United States into the country Aug. 9 — opening access to a resort corner of Minnesota. 

Canada has had strict border controls for more than a year, as it has tried to stem the potential flow of COVID-19 into the country.
