Good morning Voornaam, There's an excellent new episode of Magic Markets coming your way this week, featuring geopolitical analyst Dimitri Zabelin and a discussion on how Trump's policies could impact markets - including emerging markets. To set the scene from an equity perspective and focusing on the tech companies driving global indices, our most recent episode was a dive into those tech earnings and how we are positioned in the sector. Find it here>>> Have you read Dominique Olivier's latest column on whether we are really living longer? You always have to be careful of statistics presented as a marketing tool. After all, wouldn't it be convenient for the retirement industry if we suddenly started living past 100? Dominique separates fact from fiction in this piece>>> MultiChoice delivers us the juiciest company news story this morning. I must be honest, after suffering through an unwatchable stream of the Springboks game over the weekend, there's zero sympathy from my side that they lost a whopping 1.8 million subscribers in the past year, or 11% of their base! The results are awful and I can't imagine where this leaves them if the Canal+ deal is blocked. Elsewhere, companies like AVI, Bidcorp, Premier and Santam are doing a solid job of navigating tricky conditions. The AVI and Bidcorp narratives give opposing views on South African consumers, so the uncertainty of the quality of the GNU-led recovery remains. At least there are no doubts at Quantum, where things are far better in poultry, or Mantengu Mining where they are ramping up the business. Over at Metair, they are a step closer to selling the business in Turkey in a critical deal. And at Powerfleet, it's also all about the deals - especially integrating them and achieving cost savings. For details on these stories and the other Nibbles, read Ghost Bites here>>> Keen to learn more about Calgro M3? You'll enjoy their latest appearance on Unlock the Stock. The dynamic duo in the management team also spoke about why they are moving on from the group after so many years and what the future holds for Calgro M3, so don't miss it. In case you needed any further proof that share prices trade on future estimates rather than actual numbers, Spotify's share price jumped 7% based on a profit forecast for the fourth quarter ahead of estimates, even though they missed estimates for the third quarter! Spotify Premium memberships are up 12% year-on-year. It's one of the very last products I would ever cancel in my life, so I totally get it. Home Depot beat estimates for earnings and revenue, with sales up 6% year-on-year. Although the group hasn't seen much uplift in spending from interest rates coming down, they are trying to convince the market that there is "pent-up demand" for projects. Our latest research in Magic Markets Premium is on Microsoft. The world's most important tech business from an enterprise computing standpoint isn't just adapting to the world of AI - it's driving that world forward. But does that change the Microsoft investment case? You'll find out in our research for subscribers this week. |

IG Markets Morning Call: daily macroeconomic update |
---|
|
---|
As US Treasury Yields continue to rise and the dollar trades at four month highs, equity markets around the globe are trading softer ahead of today’s US CPI and Core CPI inflation data release. The JSE All-Share Index is in turn expected to open flat to marginally lower, while the rand is trading at its weakest levels against the greenback since August this year. Oil prices are trading flat in early trade today although remain near their lowest levels in more than a week. Base metals have been led lower by copper prices as China’s recent stimulus measures fail to provide confidence around demand from the region and the dollar continues to weigh. Gold remains in a long term uptrend although trades at its weakest levels since the US election, with the stronger dollar continuing to provide a headwind for the precious yellow metal. Key Indicators: USD/ZAR R18.08/$ | US 10yr 4.43% | Gold $2,615/oz | Platinum $952/oz | Brent Crude $71.90
