Minnesota opioid treatment clinics overwhelmed as needs rise, staffs shrink

Duluth’s Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment is the only licensed opioid treatment program across Minnesota’s Arrowhead, a territory roughly the size of Massachusetts. Its Clear Path Clinic has space for 475 people; some drive for hours to meet with a counselor or re-up on methadone. It’s a lifeline for those trying to break free of addiction.

Now, though, the clinic is full. About 40 people sit on a waiting list with few alternatives other than waiting and hoping. Even if they could make it to Brainerd, St. Cloud or the Twin Cities for treatment, many clinics are in similar straits — pushed to near or above their limits amid a nationwide opioid crisis.

“We’ve never been overcapacity until this year,” said Jenn Villa, program director at Clear Path clinic. “We have people dying who are sitting on our waiting list, trying to get in.”

 
What else we're watching:
Minnesota Historical Society employees rally as contract talks continue. Employees at the MNHS rallied Saturday in St. Paul as negotiations continue for an initial union contract. The workers formed AFSCME Local 3173 last year, but have yet to reach an agreement with MNHS.

Argentina beat defending-champion France in the final. It's the third World Cup title for Argentina but the first for Messi — the only trophy he hadn't won in his storied and remarkable career.

Wild beat Senators 4-2 for 5th straight win. Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and two assists for Minnesota as the Wild held on to beat the Ottawa Senators. Mats Zuccarello had a goal and an assist, Jared Spurgeon also scored, and Sam Steel had two assists for the Wild.

Timberwolves beat Bulls 150-126 to break team scoring mark. Anthony Edwards had season highs with 37 points and 11 assists and the Minnesota Timberwolves broke the franchise record for points in a game, routing the Chicago Bulls 150-126 on Sunday night.

The White House tries a new tack to combat homelessness. The Biden administration says to end the homelessness crisis, more must be done to keep people from losing housing in the first place. But identifying and reaching those most at risk is a challenge.

Updated COVID booster shots reduce the risk of hospitalization, CDC reports. The CDC came out with two studies to detail the bivalent booster's effectiveness against COVID-related emergency department visits and hospitalization.
