Early Career Astrobiology Opportunities, September 2024 Digest

Please read over the list of upcoming events and deadlines that are relevant to early career astrobiologists. New Deadline: Tuesday, October 15th, 2024

The Astrobiology Early Career Collaboration Awards offer research-related travel support for undergraduate, graduate students, postdocs, and junior scientists. Applicants are encouraged to use these resources to circulate among two or more laboratories supported by the NASA Astrobiology Program (RCNs, ICARs, or Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology, Planetary Science and Technology Through Analog Research, MatiSSE, PICASSO and the Habitable Worlds), however any travel that is critical for the applicant’s research will be considered. Travelers must be formally affiliated with a U.S. institution. Requests are limited to $5,000.

The American Philosophical Society and the NASA Astrobiology Program have partnered to promote the continued exploration of the world around us through a program of research grants in support of astrobiological field studies undertaken by graduate students, postdoctoral students, and early career scientists who are affiliated with U.S. institutions.

The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology is designed for field studies in any area of astrobiology research. Grants may be used for travel and related expenses, including field equipment, up to $5,000. Additional information, including the application forms and instructions, is available the website below.

The NASA Astrobiology Program element of the NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) provides opportunities for Ph.D. scientists and engineers to perform research on projects largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the NASA Astrobiology Program.

Applications to the Astrobiology Program are accepted twice each year: March 1 and November 1. Note that the Astrobiology Program does not participate in every application/award cycle. For additional information about the program see the NPP website below.

The American Philosophical Society (APS) is pleased to partner with the Green Bank Observatory (GBO) to offer research support through a new program. Funding is derived from a grant to the GBO by Dr. Martine Rothblatt, Chair and CEO of United Therapeutics, Inc. These grants are named in honor of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, Nobel Laureate, first Director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, and President of the American Philosophical Society from 2005 until 2011.

Funds are available to support graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early career scientists. The focus will be on three types of work not necessarily funded by other currently available sources. These areas of research are field work in China, collaborative research, and attendance at conferences. Applications will be reviewed by a select committee at the GBO, APS Members, and scholars from wider science community as needed. The program is intended to complement the Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology, open to field studies in any area of interest to astrobiology.
