| Dear Supporter, Welcome to our Spring 2022 CRUK Early Diagnosis Newsletter and what is, after 14 years, my last time introducing it. It is incredible to see the way that the early diagnosis community has grown so much over that time and how much has been achieved. Of course, there is still much more to be done, but as we and many others have felt via our research series sessions, there is a lot to be hopeful for. If I’ve learned one thing over my time at CRUK, it is that working together is when the magic happens, and I know that there are so many amazing things yet to come. There is a hugely talented and passionate team at CRUK who will continue to drive forward our work in early diagnosis, collaborating closely with all of you. Thank you for all you have done and all that you continue to do to drive improvements for people affected by cancer. It has been a privilege to be part of this. Stay safe and thank you for reading.

New Paper Looks at the State of the Early Detection Field Colleagues in CRUK played a key coordinating role and contributed as authors in the following paper ‘How can we overcome key research challenges to enable early detection of cancer?’ The paper, published recently in Science, looks at the current state of the field for early detection research. From understanding the biology and prognosis of early cancer to determining the risk of developing cancer, the authors review some of the biggest challenges and suggest a constructive framework to accelerate progress. The paper highlights the need for further innovations and development of early cancer detection approaches, as well as an interdisciplinary research culture.  Apply Now for our Targeted Research Call Late last year, we worked with colleagues in the Research and Innovation directorate at CRUK to convene a group of experts and interested stakeholders on the topic of endpoints in screening trials. As one of the follow ups to that, we have opened a call for proposals for a systematic review of the existing cancer screening trial literature for evidence of surrogate endpoints and their utility. The generation of this review will provide a timely and necessary contribution to understanding potential candidate screening trial surrogate endpoints and the identification of key recommendations and/or gaps for future research. |  NHS Cancer Programme – Innovation Open Call NHS England and NHS Improvement open call for innovation in cancer diagnosis - Competition 2 Following the success from the first call launched last year, NHS England and NHS Improvement is delighted to announce a £15 million funding competition for innovation in the field of cancer. This competition invites applications for funding to implement solutions in late-stage development into front-line settings to improve early detection and diagnosis of cancer. The competition opens on 5th April 2022 and closes 24th May 2022. This competition is supported by SBRI Healthcare and NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative. |

|  Age Extension in Bowel Cancer Screening Programmes The bowel cancer screening programme in England is expanding to 50-59 years olds over a gradual four year process, which began in April 2021. Therefore, people may now receive a test before they turn 60. Updated GP Contract Hub for 2022/23 To support GPs in England deliver on the 2022-23 Primary Care Network (PCN) specification on the early diagnosis of cancer, Cancer Research UK has updated its free, online one-stop contract hub for GPs. It is quick and easy to access. The information on the hub summarises what GPs need to do, and how to get started, including recommendations on what to do from Cancer Research UK front-line GPs. The hub has case studies, hints and tips, evidence-based practical resources, training and further support, including new information about the inclusion of FIT testing as an indicator in the Investment and Impact Fund. Latest 'Help Us, Help You' Campaign During March 2022, NHS England & NHS Improvement launched a new phase of the ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign taking a radically different approach to detecting cancer earlier for patients, when it is easier to treat. The campaign aimed to address the barriers to people coming forward early by encouraging those who have noticed something in their body that doesn’t feel right and are worried it could be cancer to contact their GP practice. This is the first ‘Help Us, Help You’ cancer campaign to focus on tackling the ‘fear’ of cancer rather than specific symptoms.
As a result, health professionals may have seen an increase in patient presentation. CRUK produced a Managing non-specific symptoms resource to support information can aid your referral decisions read below.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month - April 2022 April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and to help support you we are delighted to share the updated Bowel Cancer Screening Primary Care Good Practice Guide (UK Wide). This resource outlines the latest evidence and good practice to support primary care health professionals to engage with the eligible bowel cancer screening population and encourage informed participation. Alongside our updated resource we have revamped our bowel cancer screening webpage which hosts a wealth of evidence and resources to support health professionals to increase informed participation in bowel cancer screening.

Cancer Early Diagnosis Charity Coalition (CEDCC) – E-learning offers & Resources The Cancer Early Diagnosis Charity Coalition (CEDCC) continues to go from strength to strength with 29 cancer charities now members of the coalition. At the last meeting several charities shared their health professional education offers. Please find links below. Sarcoma UK - Early Diagnosis: A New Course for Healthcare Professionals Sarcoma UK have supported the development of a new course alongside GatewayC, that focuses on sarcoma and the importance of early diagnosis. The course is free, CPD accredited and suitable for all healthcare professionals across England and you can register for this course now at gatewayc.org.uk/courses Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) – Referral Guidance for Childhood Cancer
Endorsed by NICE, CCLG has developed referral guidance specific to children, as it is recognised that there are a number of differences in the presentation, referral pathways and care of children with cancer compared with those of adults. You can find the guidance here.
Myeloma Diagnostic Tool and Myeloma and MGUS: A Guide for GPs
Myeloma UK have collaborated with healthcare professionals to create resources aimed at tackling the issue of delayed diagnosis. Supported by Target Ovarian Cancer and hosted by RCGP eLearning. Register for the course here Leukaemia Care – E- learning Leukaemia Care have two eLearning modules in partnership with the RCGP. One is on blood cancer and the other is on the diagnosis and management of leukaemia.
