Come with us now on a journey through time and space as we explore how Outer Wilds attempts answer this question. We dig into the meta design of Outer Wilds, from early 2D prototypes to the final structure of the game's overarching mystery. Along the way we share techniques for inspiring and rewarding player curiosity, the challenge of communicating an unconventional game structure, and how curiosity-driven exploration fits into the broader landscape of open world game design. It will cover the process and challenges faced in taking a very established pop cultural theme and reimagining it within the franchise. As a western team it was important to immerse ourselves in the subject matter, and seek outside expertise to best represent other cultures. To be successful we had to challenge the status quo of a well-established franchise and move forward to modernize, make something more contemporary, and appeal to a new audience. With this came a focus on accessibility, and the entire 15-year-old legacy of Total War UI was redesigned. We will look at at how the style pillars were defined and specifically the way we developed the ink based interface as a foundation to achieving a fundamentally illustrative interface. Overall the talk will attempt to break down the process of developing a distinctive visual style for the game covering the challenges faced and insight into how they were dealt with. Learn More >> |

| Production & Team Management Core Concepts Diversify Your Kingdom: A Toolkit for More Women in Leadership Sabrina Carmona - Senior Producer - King Research tells us that the tech industry is losing female talent, due to lack of leadership development programs (e.g. coaching, sponsorship, career counselling). Attracting women towards tech roles is also challenging due to the small number of female tech leaders, despite women being as capable and performing on par or better than their male counterparts. There are a number of factors that get in the way of women progressing into leadership roles. In this session, the focus is to show King's strategic approach to bridge this gap in leadership via recruitment best practices and a tailored development program for women in leadership. By broadening the pool and diversifying leaders for the future, we create a culture that is inclusive to everyone and integrates D&I into core people processes so that we remove barriers preventing the hiring of diverse candidates and the development of women into leadership and influential roles.
