🏅Olympics, New NBA Rights Package Boost NBC’s Ad Revenue, Streaming Hopes |
NBC paid $7.75 billion for the rights to broadcast the Olympics (summer and winter) through 2032. |
The move didn’t seem like a layup considering delayed Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympics did not go especially well (low ratings, a challenging time difference for U.S. viewers, criticism with NBC’s streaming performance via Peacock, no fans due to COVID-19). |
But the early returns on this year’s Paris Olympics seem glowing. |
NBCUniversal says it will surpass $1.25 billion in ad revenue, setting a new record for the company that has held the Summer Olympics broadcast rights since 1988. |
NBC touted a total audience of 41.5 million across NBC, Peacock and other company platforms on the first Sunday of the Olympic games according to Nielsen and Adobe Analytics. |
Peacock lost $348 million in Q2, a marked improvement. That’s still a ton of money to lose every three months. The platform also lost about $2.8 billion in 2023. |
But in addition to the Olympics, NBC reportedly will pay $2.5 billion per year for its first NBA broadcast rights package since 2002. |
Netflix and YouTube remain as streaming royalty. But it’s clear that, especially from a sports standpoint, NBC plans to be a major player. |
It will be interesting to see how close NBC can get Peacock to profitability in the next several quarters. |
