How to include sustainability aspects on substitution in analysis of alternatives and socio-economic analysis Nearly 50 experts of the Network of REACH Socio-economic analysis and Analysis of alternatives practitioners (NeRSAP) met in Antwerp on 24 and 25 June 2024.
They discussed and shared experiences of: approaches that can be adopted in the search for safer alternatives;economic tools and behavioural aspects that could stimulate sustainable substitution; andREACH applications for authorisation process in context of supporting identification of more sustainable alternatives.The workshop was organised by Eurometaux. ECHA will organise the next meeting of this network in Helsinki in 2025. European Commission updates REACH Restrictions Roadmap The updated Rolling List of (groups of) substances for restriction was updated on 1 July. The roadmap outlines ongoing efforts and future plans for restrictions under REACH. It prioritises group restrictions for the most harmful substances to human health and the environment, in line with the EU’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
This is the first update to the roadmap since its initial launch in April 2022. European Commission decisions on applications for authorisation The Commission has granted an authorisation for for a use of 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol, ethoxylated (4-tert-OPnEO).
It has also granted two authorisations for uses of chromium trioxide.

Biocides
Guidance on water treatment starts applying in April 2026 The national competent authorities have agreed that the “Guidance on the impact of water treatment processes on residues of active substances in drinking water” applies to active substance approvals and biocidal product authorisations for which applications are submitted on or after 1 April 2026. The guidance does not need to be applied to applications submitted before that date and will not affect the assessment of active substances in the Review Programme.
