Living a Life of Presence

Each month we will highlight a teaching or practice from Eckhart's featured talk. We encourage you to join us in focusing on this practice for the month.

During this month's main talk, Eckhart examines how suffering can become a gateway to realizing true Presence. He also explains how our resistance to challenges turns them into "problems," thus exacerbating the suffering they might cause.

This month's exercise arrives at the intersection of these two ideas. Throughout the coming weeks, try to notice when one of life's many challenges leads to experiences of discomfort, stress, irritation, anger, or fear. Whether it's an unexpected car repair, sudden illness, an argument with a spouse, or a spilled glass of water, pause and take note of how you are reacting in the moment.

Once you have caught your resistance to the challenge, try to reframe your suffering. How can this experience—no matter how painful—lead to growth and change? What will this "problem" teach you that will be valuable in reacting to other challenges? What does it reveal about the consciousness of those around you—and of the universe? And can you use this suffering to practice non-resistance and equanimity in the face of hardship?

When you reframe suffering as an opportunity for growth in both your form and essence identities, we think you'll find life's inevitable challenges much more approachable. Please visit our community Facebook group and share your experience. As always, we look forward to hearing about your journey.
