ECRI to take over critical online resource of evidence-based guidelines

On Monday, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, as it had previously announced it would do, officially shut down its operation of the National Guidelines Clearinghouse. But, just a day later, ECRI Institute announced it will take over sponsorship of the clearinghouse sometime this fall.

Healthcare must do more to address second-victim syndrome

More attention is being paid to second victims, and support options are slowly growing. Leaders, administrators, and safety and risk officers have become more understanding that doctors, nurses, and specialists directly involved in an adverse patient event or traumatic episode are likely to suffer an emotional response causing sleep deprivation, guilt, anxiety, or reduced job satisfaction.

Anytime you see cardboard boxes stored directly on a floor, you need to ask what’s in them, and if there is any infection control concern related to their contents, then the boxes need to be moved or at least lifted off the floor or your healthcare facility could be cited by The Joint Commission, CMS, or another authority.

AORN says it expects to change recommendations for OR headwear

Ever since AORN recommended several years ago that bouffant hats be worn by surgical team members, there's been a back-and-forth of testy statements and unsatisfying studies. But after participating in a recent task force that discussed OR attire, specifically ear and hair covering, AORN expects to change its stance.
