| What a day it was Monday with the big news coming out of the LSU Football Ops building that we'll have a late-season quarterback competition this week. Ed Orgeron announced that sophomore Max Johnson and true freshman Garrett Nussmeier will split reps 50-50 in practice this week and Nussmeier will get snaps in Saturday night's game against Arkansas. Johnson has started all nine games this season and has started 11 in a row dating to last season, while Nussmeier has seen limited action in three games. But Nussmeier, who the coaching staff wanted to redshirt, went to Orgeron and asked for a chance to compete with Johnson, who has struggled the past three games. It could mean that Nussmeier won't get to redshirt, but Orgeron, speaking at his weekly news conference, said the youngster was adamant about getting an opportunity after Saturday's 20-14 setback at No. 2 Alabama. “We’re going to let the best man win,” Orgeron said of the competition. That wasn't the only football news Monday. Columnist Scott Rabalais pares down his list of coaching candidates and we learned the kickoff time of the Nov. 20 game with UL-Monroe (here's a hint: it's not an 11 a.m. game).
