Amanda Mastrull, Assistant Editor

Happy Presidents’ Day! It may still be winter, but we here at LJ Reviews are thinking spring. Below you’ll find our annual Editors’ Spring Picks feature, which includes a bevy of great upcoming books. There are literary bios (spanning Jane Austen to the Beats), a baking book by the editors of Martha Stewart Living, some elusive spies, an examination of journalism after Edward Snowden (that’s one of my picks), Prepub editor Barbara Hoffert’s interview with Music of the Ghosts author Vaddey Ratner, and more. The newest Crafts & DIY column is strong, too—there’s a book on making your own cosplay outfits that sounds pretty cool, and I’m personally really looking forward to trying out the short-row knitting techniques in Knitting Short Rows. Elsewhere in the newsletter we also have Doug Lord’s latest Books for Dudes, Neal Wyatt’s tips for what to read and watch after Hidden Figures, and more.

When so inclined, novelists and their readers can find something extraordinary in well-worn genres like dark fantasy or crime drama. When such genres are combined, however, the potential for such amazement is increased. Such is the case with Tim Lebbon’s new novel, Relics.
