The Founding Fathers would be "horrified"

Legal scholars debated whether the conduct of President Donald Trump rose to the threshold necessary for his removal from office. Three of the scholars testified that Trump's efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rivals clearly met the definition of abuse of power and warranted impeachment, while one argued it did not [New York Times].


"Are you ready?"

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is making it clear to her House colleagues a vote on impeachment over President Trump's actions in the Ukraine scandal is coming [Washington Post].


Trump's new impeachment defense

President Trump is shifting his explanation for the July 25 phone call with the president of Ukraine at the center of the impeachment inquiry. Trump now insists when he asked the Ukrainian President to "do us a favor," he meant the United States as a whole, not him personally [Axios].


No evidence of campaign spying

The prosecutor handpicked by Attorney General William Barr to probe the conduct of U.S. agencies during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election said he could not find evidence to support the theory that the whole affair was a set up to ensnare the Trump campaign [Washington Post].


Abrupt exit

President Trump abruptly canceled a news conference at the NATO summit after video emerged of other world leaders appearing to mock him. Trump blasted Candian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "two-faced" [Politico].


Warren vs. Bloomberg

Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren appeared on Bloomberg News Wednesday where she accused the channel's owner, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, of trying to buy the 2020 election [Bloomberg].


Say cheese!

The Department of Homeland Security may require travelers, including Americans, to be photographed as they enter or leave the country [ABC News].


Overpayment

President Trump's $28 billion farm bailout may be paying many growers more than the trade war with China has cost them [Bloomberg].

1792 - George Washington was re-elected president and John Adams was re-elected vice president.

1848 - President James Polk confirmed the discovery of gold in California, leading to the "gold rush" of 1848 and '49.

1933 - Prohibition of liquor in the United States was repealed when Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

1955 - Blacks declared a boycott of city buses in Montgomery, Ala., demanding seating on an equal basis with whites. The boycott was prompted by the arrest of Rosa Parks, a black woman who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man.
