DEATH PENALTY: In his final months in office, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards faces a consequential decision whether to spare 51 condemned inmates from execution. Edwards hasn’t yet tipped his hand, but people close to him say this will guide his thinking.
MYSTERY MONEY: Last year, as the Louisiana Senate crafted the state budget, somebody slipped in an amendment to steer $3 million to a government health organization that hadn’t asked for the money. Now it turns out that one of the people lobbying for the appropriation is implicated in a bribery scheme that hangs over officials of the Lafayette district attorney’s office and former state Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Jack Montoucet.
