It was the great Miracle margarine shortage of 1967, The Canberra Times used its front page to report on this day 53 years ago today. Canberra grocers were bereft of Miracle margarine, manufactured by Marrickville Margarine Pty Ltd, while the Sydney distributors could not say when supplies would spread out across the country again. Supplies had been short for several weeks and were "doled out" to shops so that each store received at least part of its order. National margarine quotas, which were introduced in Australia in 1940, were designed to protect the dairy industry, which manufactured butter.
