Prime Minister Petr Fiala is scheduled to fly to Egypt on Sunday afternoon to attend the start of the UN climate conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
His three-day trip will also include bilateral talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the summit and a meeting with members of the Czech contingent of the Multinational Force and Observers mission, an international peacekeeping force overseeing the terms of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
The Czech Prime Minister will also participate in a roundtable on water management, open a panel discussion on supporting education in the field of climate change, and deliver a speech at the plenary session in the afternoon.
Valère Gustin, one of the last Belgian WWII veterans who helped liberate the west Bohemian town of Plzeň in May 1945, died in Belgium on Saturday morning at the age of 98.
Gustin was born in 1924 in the village of Verlaine near Liège. In 1945 he joined the Belgian 17th Rifle Battalion which participated in the liberation of Plzeň as part of the Third US Army led by General George Patton.
He was one of five Belgian and US veterans who took part in the Freedom Celebration in Plzeň in May this year. He also attended the unveiling of a memorial plaque dedicated by Plzeň to the 17th Rifle Battalion in Liege, where most of its members came from.
A meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel will be held in Prague on Monday and Tuesday under the Czech Presidency of the EU Council.
According to the press release, the meeting aims to assess the situation in Africa’s Sahel region, coordinate the positions of EU Member States and consult with other like-minded partners from the US, Norway and Canada as well as international organisations.
The meeting, which will take place in the Czernin Palace, the seat of Czechia’s Foreign Ministry, will be chaired by EU Special Representative for the Sahel, Emanuela Del Re.
Slovak road hauliers are planning to block the D2 motorway from Czechia to Slovakia on the night from Sunday to Monday in protest against the worsening conditions of their business, the Slovak media reported on Sunday, citing the Union of Road Hauliers of Slovakia.
In reaction to the news, the Czech police announce it will double the capacity for clearing trucks on the Czech side of the border crossing in Lanžhot-Kúty.
The Slovak truck drivers have been threatening to block the border crossings since February this year. They are demanding a cut in the excise tax on fuel as well as concessions on road tax to ease the impact of high oil prices on transporting companies.
An exhibition presenting the life’s work of the twin sisters Květa and Jitka Válová, got underway in Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region in Kutná Hora on Sunday.
Entitled A Path Destined by Faith, it presents numerous works on loan from other galleries, as well as works from both sisters’ estates that were donated to the GASK collection in 2021, marking the centenary of the sisters’ birth.
Květa and Jitka Válová are considered one of the most distinctive Czech artists of their generation. In 2019, they were posthumously awarded the title Dames of Czech Culture.
Javelin thrower Jakub Vadlejch has been named Czech Athlete of the Year for the second year running. The 32-year-old, who took a silver medal at the last world championships and a silver medal at European championships.
Another javelin thrower, Barbora Špotáková, who won the annual poll nine times, came second. Shot putter Tomáš Staněk, who also won a bronze medal at the European championships, finished in the third place.
The annual Athlete of the Year prize is voted on by athletics officials, trainers and journalists.
Monday will be partly cloudy with day temperatures ranging between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius.
This week’s Sunday Music Show is dedicated to rock musician Michal Ambrož, the frontman of the popular band Jasná Páka whose music was a beacon for many in a generation of Czechs that grew up in the final years of Communist Czechoslovakia. Ambrož died at the age of 68 on Monday, after suffering from a long illness. Despite his health, the musician continued to be active. Touring as recently as this year with his more recent band Hudba Praha.
Frantisek Bílek's villa in Hradčany is one of the most original houses in Prague. The villa has an unusual round floor plan, which is supposed to resemble the footprint of a scythe in a field of wheat. Wheat plants also served as inspiration for the villa’s exterior and interior decor. November 6, marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous Czech Art Nouveau Symbolist sculptor František Bílek, who designed and built this villa for his family.
