By Dan Kraker, MPR News It's been a busy few weeks at the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. The PUC is charged with approving the rates that the state's regulated utilities can charge for their electric and natural gas service. And right now, the state's biggest electric and gas utilities are all requesting rate increases. "It's definitely a lot of these happening at the same time, more than normal,” said Annie Levenson-Falk, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board, which advocates for the state's residential utility customers.
It’s not just the number of rate requests that’s notable. "These are really, really large rate increase requests, much larger than you would typically see,” said Levenson-Falk. [Continue reading]

Sun Country Airlines canceled all of its flights Monday morning, saying a third-party system outage is affecting all of its operations.
In a press release, Sun Country Airlines said they received reports of a temporary third-party network system outage affecting all Sun Country flights, as well as the flights of many other airlines worldwide.
“As a result, this morning, domestic flights scheduled before 8 a.m. CT were canceled and passengers were issued full refunds and waived change fees,” the release said. “Currently, our Operations team is executing our approved manual process and working closely with the FAA to clear flights for takeoff.” [Continue reading] | |

Family members and community activists are disputing the official account of a fatal police shooting last week in Austin, Minn.
The man, who has not yet been officially identified, was fatally shot by a police officer in the parking lot of a gas station in Austin on Thursday night, after he left his home following a lengthy standoff.
A statement from Austin police alleges the man was shot because he confronted officers while armed with a knife.
Michelle Gross with Twin Cities-based Communities United Against Police Brutality has been in contact with the man's family, and is raising money to help them. She said Sunday that the man was having a mental health crisis and was not threatening anyone.
"It's a wrongful death situation. There's no question about it. And we are definitely saying that the police are ... lying about the situation," she said. "If they think that they're so right, they should release the body camera footage immediately." [Continue reading] | |

Desmond Tutu, South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist for racial justice and LGBT rights and retired Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, has died, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Sunday. Sarah Weddington, lawyer who argued Roe v. Wade, dies at 76. Sarah Weddington, a Texas lawyer who as a 26-year-old successfully argued the landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade before the U.S. Supreme Court, died Sunday.
Despite supply issues and omicron, holiday sales rise 8.5%. Holiday sales rose at the fastest pace in 17 years, even as shoppers grappled with higher prices, product shortages and a raging new COVID-19 variant in the last few weeks of the season, according to one spending measure.
