Weekly Roundup

Featured content: Elements to be included in an organization's credentialing program

All accrediting and regulatory bodies require policies and procedures that describe the credentialing program of an MCO or health plan. Policies and procedures provide the framework under which MSPs and credentialing specialists perform their work. They also define the credentialing and recredentialing criteria, enabling health plans to objectively evaluate and select network practitioners to provide care and to meet its goals for provider access and availability.

Leadership insight: Study: Female surgeons undervalue future earning potential compared to male counterparts

A recent survey conducted by LA BioMed asked surgical residents to state what an ideal salary would be after completing residency, and researchers found that female surgeons reported expected salaries that were approximately $30,000 less than that reported by their male counterparts. This was in spite of the fact that male and female respondents expected to work the same number of hours and shared equal desires to hold leadership positions and conduct their own research.

The essentials of credentialing and privileging in telemedicine

With the number of patients utilizing telemedicine services expected to reach 7 million by the end of 2018, the telehealth industry has certainly reached new heights in recent years—and it’s rapidly diversifying. Telemedicine typically refers to a medical service or appointment with a healthcare provider conducted via a broadband internet connection. In some cases, this may be as simple as a radiologist looking at a scan from a remote hospital. In other cases, a patient may actually be diagnosed by a physician via a video appointment.

Implementing effective mandatory flu vaccine programs

With flu season upon us, now is the time for hospitals and other healthcare facilities to consider implementing a mandatory vaccination program for seasonal influenza. Some employees may initially object, but most experts agree that flu shots are a necessity for healthcare workers. Many healthcare workers already understand that getting a flu shot every fall helps protect not only themselves, but also coworkers, friends and family, and of course patients. Others, however, will require more than a reminder of the 2017–2018 flu season, which was the worst in nearly a decade, to go get vaccinated for the flu.

Identifying false credentials

A rise in interest in osteopathic medicine has led to confusion about who is trained to practice this type of medicine. Physician leaders and MSPs must play a part in protecting patients from practitioners who falsify their credentials.
