Thursday's Wake Up incorrectly reported the Browns game vs. the New Orleans Saints is on Sunday. The game is at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Wake Up will not publish on Monday, Dec. 26, because of the holiday. Have a safe and merry Christmas! House Bill 6: A top FirstEnergy Corp. executive privately pledged that Gov. Mike DeWine’s administration would “step in” to support legislation now at the center of the largest public corruption scheme in state history, newly released documents show. Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, in particular, was “highly engaged” on the bill, company executive Mike Dowling said in a text to CEO Charles “Chuck” Jones. Jake Zuckerman and Jeremy Pelzer report the comments came in a tranche of text messages and emails released Wednesday in connection with a civil lawsuit against FirstEnergy over its executives’ conduct surrounding the passage of House Bill 6 in 2019. Winter storm: Northeast Ohio is bracing for extreme cold and snow today, and anticipation of the harsh conditions have led to several closures and cancellations, Molly Walsh reports. All Cuyahoga County offices will be closed today, as well as attractions such as "A Christmas Story" House and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Jeremy Pelzer reports that Gov. Mike DeWine and state emergency officials are encouraging people to stay home during the storm. Today in Ohio: In the wake of this year’s court battle over gerrymandered maps, outgoing Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor says she is concerned about Ohio politicians’ ignorance and lack of respect for foundational government principles. We’re talking about O’Connor’s warning on Today in Ohio. |

He will be sworn in on Jan. 7. Ukraine aid: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night prompted several Ohio members of Congress to call for continued aid to the embattled nation’s fight against Russian invaders, though the support was not unanimous, Sabrina Eaton reports. Capitol riot: A survey of 504 residents of Cuyahoga, Summit, Lake, Geauga, Portage, Medina and Lorain counties conducted by Baldwin Wallace University’s Community Research Institute between Oct. 7 and Oct. 18 found bipartisan backing for criminal prosecutions of rioters who tried to overturn results of the 2020 presidential election by rampaging through the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Sabrina Eaton reports. |

Hopkins security: On the busy travel day before Thanksgiving, Isaac Woolley drove to the main radar tower at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, disabled a gate, deactivated the radar’s main power source, climbed eight flights of stairs, shut off a second power source and pulled several wires from the radar, rendering it inoperable, according to federal court records. Susan Glaser reports Cleveland Hopkins has dealt with perimeter breaches before, but nothing like this. Pedestrian struck: A woman died after being struck by a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot in Parma on Wednesday, police said. Joan Litvin, 83, was walking in front of Giant Eagle in the 7400 block of Broadview Road when the incident happened, Molly Walsh reports. Fatal crash: A woman died Thursday afternoon after she was struck by a car that drove into her Maple Heights apartment, Molly Walsh reports. Car thefts: Car thefts have spiked in Cuyahoga County in the past few months in a trend that mirrors a broader issue across Ohio and the nation: Many of the cars were Kias and Hyundais. In Cuyahoga County, thieves made off with 842 vehicles in the past two months from the South Korean automakers, Ryan Bokoch, the supervisor of the Crime Strategies Unit for the office of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, tells Molly Walsh. |

Ski season: Boston Mills ski resort in Summit County will open for the season on Saturday, with three lifts operating and limited terrain, Susan Glaser reports. Sister park Brandywine is expected to open early next week. No word yet on when Alpine Valley in Geauga County, also owned by Vail Resorts, will open for the season. Revisiting movies: Time flies, especially when you realize it feels like yesterday when you saw a particular movie. Marc Bona takes a look at films that came out 20 years earlier ("Bourne Identity," "Spider-Man') and even includes a few that go back 30 years. |
