Where NOLA Eats

Greetings, New Orleans food fans! This week, we go behind the scenes at Emeril's, where a son is following his father's legacy. The team that powered the closed Royal China is back in a new location. More than 30 restaurants will serve Réveillon dinners this holiday season, while NOLA Nite Market returns Saturday with a festival of Asian street food. If you love tiki Santa, you'll love Beachbum Larry's this month. And we have a treasured family cornbread dressing recipe you can try this holiday season.

1. A new chapter at Emeril's.

Emeril’s, the original restaurant from celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, now serves a number of distinct tasting menus, which together point the way for a different chapter here. The change is guided by a culinary team that includes veteran local chefs, Emeril Lagasse and a new collaborator – his son E.J. Lagasse.

2. Royal redux?

Shirley and Tang Lee closed Royal China in Metairie, planning to retire and do some traveling. But instead, the voyage inspired them to start again. Now, their new spot, Miss Shirley's Chinese Restaurant, is open on Magazine Street.

3. Wait! There's more.

Thirty-plus restaurants will serve festive Réveillon dinners in December.  NOLA Nite Market is back Saturday with a festival of Asian street food.  And Sippin' Santa, the annual winter pop-up that transforms Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29 from a tropical tiki bar to a festive winter wonderland, has five new drinks and fun, collectible mugs.

4. Dressing for the holidays.

Holidays are special, and so is this cornbread dressing recipe — a treasured family favorite that Teresa B. Day's mom was kind enough to share.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info on Where NOLA Eats.

The Must Read

Melba’s brings 24-hour po-boys, daiquiris, rooftop deck to Mid-City with second location

As the hour grows later, it’s harder to find a meal around New Orleans. If you’re after a meal in the true wee hours, the task is even taller. The loss of low-key but valued 24-hour spots like St. Charles Tavern and the Trolley Stop Café through the pandemic cut deep into the old-school ranks. Read more

What to cook

Holidays are special, and so is this cornbread dressing recipe

For me, there is one dish that makes the holiday — any holiday — and that’s my mother’s cornbread dressing. We love it for Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Easter, if we’re in the mood for it. But, the extensive process has always been reserved for holiday meals. That’s to ensure it’s always special and appreciated. Read more
