Opening European Month of Photography 2018
 
Opening: Friday 28 September 2018, 19:00
 
The EMOP Opening Days 2018 are devoted to the central themes of photography: light and time, and with it to the question of what photography will look like in the twenty-first century. The program of events, curated by Felix Hoffmann and Ann-Christin Bertrand, will feature talks and panels with internationally renowned photographers, curators, media experts, and journalists, accompanied by performances, music acts, workshops for adults, children and teenagers, and Photobook: RESET.

In the summer of 1975, Nicholas Nixon took a picture of his girlfriend, Bebe, and her three sisters at a family celebration. One year later, at one of the sisters’ graduation parties, he took another photograph of the four women, and another every year since—over half a lifetime. His work tells the story of a moment, of transience, and of the sisters’ changing relationships to each other. As such, it also narrates the story of the essence of photography. The group picture becomes steeped in déjà-vu; the series of images becomes visible as passed time. The same is true for Nixon’s other pieces. Photogravures of the moon’s surface, botanical studies as blue cyanotypes, and Woodburytypes of portraits: the exhibition showcases the work of contemporary artists who are using the techniques, methods, and pro­cesses of the 19th century photography. Taking inspiration from that early photography, the artists work with light, photosensitive material, photographic emul­sion, and chemical processes.
