With the unemployment rate below 4% in nearly one-third of the metropolitan areas tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it can be difficult for many companies to find qualified workers. "Our companies are saying, 'We could grow faster, we could produce more product, if we had the workers,'" said Utah Manufacturers Association President Todd Bingham.

Access to paid family leave is growing for higher-paid salaried employees, but 94% of low-income employees do not receive the benefit, according to a report from Paid Leave for the United States. People making more than $75,000 per year are twice as likely to receive paid family leave compared to those who make less than $30,000 per year, the report says.

Study: Female mentors help women persist in STEM
Female engineering undergraduates were less likely to drop out and were more motivated and self-assured when paired with a female mentor, according to a study from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Researcher Nilanjana Dasgupta says the mentors serve as "social vaccines" against negative stereotypes that can keep some women out of science, technology, engineering and math fields.
